Dengan kehadiran sutradara Leonard Retel Helmrich/ With the presence of film director Leonard Retel Helmrich

The eye of the day (2001)

Shape of the moon (2004)

Position Among the Stars (2010)

Kita tidak perlu melihat film Retel sebelumnya untuk menikmati Position among the Stars.

++++

Leonard Retel Helmrich (1959) made a trilogy about a family who copes with life during the political and religious conflict in Indonesia. He followed the life of this family for twelve years. Leonard Retel Helmrich is the first cinematographer who received the highest award from the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and the only Dutch who ever won the grand prize of the Sundance Film Festival.

The eye of the day (2001)

In the first part of this trilogy director Leonard Retel Helmrich started following the lives of the Shamsuddin family. This period is marked by the reformasi, a tumultuous time after president Suharto steps down from office. This reform movement brings poverty, uprisings and instability to Indonesia, all of which are also experiences by the Shamsuddin family. Grandmother Rumidjah returns to her ancestral village four times a year to help her family with the harvest. To her sons, the city is their universe. The youngest, Bakti, spends his days gambling, raising pigeons and joining the student protests against the military regime. His older brother Dwi thinks Bakti should get a job and involve himself in politics the 'normal' way, via democratic elections. Retel Helmrich shows all aspects of this family's daily life without interviews, voice-overs or any other kind of interference.

Shape of the moon (2004)

In the next installment of the trilogy Retel Helmrich shows us new changes in Indonesia through the eyes of the Shamsuddin family. Grandmother Rumidjah is a Christian woman in the Muslim capital Jakarta. She wants to leave the hectic city and return to her ancestral village to enjoy her twilight years. However that means leaving her granddaughter Tari in the city. Rumidjah's life does not get any easier when her son Bakti converts to Islam in order to get married.

Position Among the Stars (2010)

For twelve years, filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich has followed an Indonesian family living in the slums of Jakarta. Just as in his previous two multiple award-winning documentaries The eye of the day (2001) and Shape of the moon (2004), Retel continues to show us the underlying patterns of life in Indonesia with his revolutionary camera work, offering viewers a microcosm revealing the most important issues in the country's fast-changing society: corruption, conflict between religions, gambling addiction, the generation gap, and the growing difference between poor and rich. Although the three films are obviously connected, each film is equally strong as a stand-alone feature. One does not have to have seen Retel's previous films to fully enjoy Position among the stars.
